Edd Doerr

Edd Doerr is president of the American Humanist Association. In the following viewpoint, he argues that despite progress made by schools in protecting students from having religious activities imposed upon them, problems remain, such as inappropriate use of religious material in music classes. He argues that public schools are not hostile to religion, and that the lack of religious content in public school curricula is due to low demand, lack of time, and the political complexities and problems inherent in teaching religion in a truly neutral fashion. Doerr concludes that schools face more pressing problems in reforming their curricula, including the teaching of science, foreign languages, and other subjects that should receive a higher priority than teaching religion.
