Handicapped fetuses should not be aborted, argues Gregg L. Cunningham in the following viewpoint. Cunningham profiles George Tiller, a Kansas physician who specializes in late- term abortions in cases where the fetus has birth defects or disabilities such as Down’s Syndrome. Cunningham maintains that aborting handicapped fetuses is unethical because many families want to adopt those children and most of the babies grow up to lead independent lives. In addition, he charges that because many of these abortions are performed so late in the case of pregnancy, they are equivalent to infanticide. Cunningham is the executive director of the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, an organization that promotes prenatal justice and right to life for the unborn, disabled, infirm, and aged.
