The Grimké sisters were born twelve years apart into a wealthy southern slaveholding family. As young women, first Sarah and then Angelina left their comfortable home in Charleston, South Carolina, to join the antislavery movement in the American North. They became speakers for the American Antislavery Society, touring New York and New England and telling their stories of slavery in the American South. The Grimké sisters were highly visible crusaders at a time when women were largely confined to the sidelines of society and were not allowed to vote, run for office, or go to college.
