During the 1990s Sante and Kenneth Kimes, a mother-and-son crime team, crisscrossed the country working scams including insurance fraud, check fraud, and theft. They were caught with a stolen car in 1998, in which police found detailed records of crimes and personal items belonging to Irene Silverman, a socialite who had disappeared from New York City. Without a body or physical evidence, the Kimeses were found guilty of 118 charges in 2001, including Silverman’s murder, which was apparently carried out as part of a plot to defraud her of her $7-million townhouse. They have also been charged or implicated in two other murders.
