Although people do not live in the ocean environment for long periods of time, the oceans have had an effect on all human life. And human life has its effect on the oceans.

Impact of the Ocean on Human Life

Without the oceans, there would be no life on Earth. Not only did the first life forms originate there, but the oceans also help sustain all life forms. Oceans help regulate gases in the atmosphere, and the phytoplankton that grows in them provide oxygen. The oceans are largely responsible for the rain, sleet, and snow that fall on land; they influence weather and help moderate temperature; they are also a source of food, water, energy, minerals, and metals.
