Objective

Chapter 1

Yu-sung came to Pao's family when she was sixteen. She left behind her own family and traveled to her new home, which "might have been a million miles away" it was so different. She does not find beauty or comfort in her new life with Pao, and she and Pao are different in most every way. This lesson will discuss Yu-sung and Pao's marriage.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Yu-sung is appalled when she steps into Pao's house: it is filthy and stinks. Pao does not remark on it, nor does he say anything after the mess is gone. He is a man of little words, while Yu-sung comes from a home of laughter and conversation at the dinner table. Discuss with the class Yu-sung's description of her husband's home.
