Objective

Objective: No Name Woman: This opening section of the novel introduces several themes that will continue throughout the book. The objective of this lesson is for students to understand "theme" as a literary device and to identify the major themes in this section of the novel.

1) For class discussion: Brainstorm ideas for how to define the word theme as a literary device. Draw an idea web on the board by putting the word "theme" in the center and creating branches from the center for each idea. Ask students to raise their hands to share ideas for how to describe theme and write those ideas on the branches of the idea web.

2) Divide students into small groups of two or three students. Have each group look up the word "theme" as a literary device in a literary dictionary or on the internet. Have each group create their own...
