Essay Topic 1

A main theme in WINTER PREY is child exploitation. Discuss the sex ring and how it plays a main part in the story. What character seems to be the first victim? Who is responsible? What could have been done about the crime? How was the child affected? What is the punishment for such an offense? What might the charges be? Investigate the crime and how a typical case might proceed.

Essay Topic 2

Reputation is a touchy subject in a small town like Grant. Explain the situation with the three single men that lived by the LaCourt house. Also discuss the issue with Elle researching Bergen's background. Why are the reputations so important? How were the people in question affected? What did Davenport learn from the information? Did it help the case?

Assuming a psychiatrist's point of view, analyze the situation with the Iceman. Discuss the character's past history in regards to psychiatric care. What would a psychiatrist say about the killer's need to commit the murders? Was the killer perverted, mentally ill, or something else? What would the terminology be from a psychiatrist's point of view? What kind of treatment might the Iceman have benefited from before the situation got out of hand? Is the behavior something that can be "cured?" If so, how? If not, what else can be done?
