Front Matter and Part I: Bird, Chapters 1 through 3

· Following the front matter, Chapter 1 of Part I: Bird, “Crystals,” begins with the narrator standing in the snow, describing the scene over which she looks and noting its graveyard qualities.
· The narrator walks through the scene, finding herself on a shoreline as the tide comes in and wondering who would be interred in such a place.
· Realizing the encroaching threat, the narrator purposes to salvage the remains not yet taken out to sea, though she despairs at how she will do so.
· The narrator wakes, noting her earlier experience as being of a dream about the site of a massacre.
· A new section notes the origins of the dream following the publication...
