Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 - 6)

Objective

This lesson introduces students to Marie Lu’s young adult sci-fi thriller Warcross. In this lesson, students will identify the novel’s genre, research the author, and analyze the narrative style established in Chapter 1. The narrative of Warcross is related from the first-person perspective of 18-year-old protagonist Emika Chen. When the reader meets Emika in Chapter 1, she is racing through Manhattan on an electric skateboard on a bounty hunt to cover her many debts and avoid eviction.

Lesson

Group Activity: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read Chapter 1 and discuss what you have gathered from it. What is the genre of Warcross? Have you read many other science-fiction thrillers? Discuss how the genre of the novel is established in the opening chapter. How “futuristic” is the setting that has been established? Is this world the same as ours or different?
