Objective

Objective: Prologue: In this section, the author relates the very beginnings of the enslavement of Africans. This lesson will discuss the reasons why slavery began and how Africans came be to chosen as the people to enslave.

1. Journal Writing: Answer the following questions - Why did Colonists decide that they needed to have slaves? Were there reasons good enough to enslave groups of people? What parts of human nature drove them to this decision?

2. Group Discussion: What was the first group of people that Colonists tried to enslave? Why did those groups not work out? Or, if they did work out as slaves, for how long did they work? How were these groups convinced to be slaves?

3. Class Discussion: What reasons led Colonists to choose Africans as slaves? Were these humane reasons? Why do you think the Africans did not get a chance to be indentured servants...
