Men and women during the early 20th century had very clear and specific gender roles. The objective of this lesson is to examine gender issues and societal expectations of the time period .

Lesson

1. Write a one page paper, comparing/contrasting the lives of Mary Carson and Fiona Cleary. Both were women living in the same time period, but they led vastly different lives.

2. Classroom discussion: Justine and her grandmother, Fiona, grew up in different eras, and it is reflected in their attitude towards their lives. Which of the two do you think is the stronger woman? Would Justine have ever been able to live the life that her grandmother lived? Her mother, Meggie?
