Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 4))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to research the background of the Rhodesian Bush War, or the Zimbabwean War of Liberation, as well as Zimbabwe's involvement in the Mozambican Civil War. These conflicts cast a long shadow over the lives of the characters in This Mournable Body, especially the protagonist, Tambudzai Siguake, or "Tambu." Tambu's sister lost a leg in the war, and she suffered the consequences from the lingering effects of the conflicts all throughout her life. Researching the background of the wars and their effects on Zimbabweans will help students understand the context of the story and Tambu's experiences.
