Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-9)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the writing technique of in media res, and how it is used in Chapters 1-9 of The Unwedding. In media res is the technique of beginning a story by starting with a pivotal point or situation that is the culmination of a series of events. Condie begins the story at the point where Ellery finds a dead body in the pool, and then takes the reader back through the journey she traveled to get to that point.

Class Discussion: How does Condie plunge into the story in the chapter titled "Sunday"? How does the author use Ellery's experience on Sunday to create suspense? How does the narrative return to the past after the scene at the pool? How are exposition and flashbacks used to relate information about Ellery and what she has been doing at the resort...
