Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 9))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the power and symbolism of plants and dryads in Part I of the novel. Faced with poisonous and murderous birds, strixes, in Part I, it is Meg's plant-growing powers that save her, Apollo and Grover. Later, the three characters arrive at a sanctuary for dryads, or plant spirits, who have a variety of healing or other special powers. Meg finds new and innovative ways to use her botanical skills and powers for defense, offense, and healing.

Class Discussion: How does Meg use plants to save herself, Apollo and Grover in Part I? What is Aeithales, where Grover takes Apollo and Meg after they leave the perilous Labyrinth? What are some of the different ways plants and dryads help Apollo in Part I?
