• This book is written in the first person, from the perspective of 12-year-old Suzy Swanson. It switches between the past and present tenses.
• There are interstitial sections between chapters with brief information from Suzy's seventh-grade science teacher, Mrs. Turton, about producing a science report.
• The first chapter is titled Ghost Heart. Suzy explains that jellyfish look like they have beating hearts if a person watches them long enough, even though they do not have hearts at all.
• Suzy says that her science teacher, Mrs. Turton, told the class that the average 80-year-old person has a heart that has beat 3 billion times.
