Although the Crow years referred to in the story take place mainly in the 1870s and beyond, The Civil War played a very large part in the story of the emancipation of the blacks in the 1800s. Examine the Civil War, its causes, and effects.

Lesson

1. The Civil War is probably the second largest important historical event in American history. Use Internet or media center resources to study the basics of the Civil War. Make a detailed outline of the events of the war. Include dates and important people.

2. Abraham Lincoln was at the forefront of the abolitionist movement. In small groups, discuss the movement, how it came about and the problems and solutions brought about by it. Also discuss the effects on the North and South. Make notes to share with the class.
