Objective

Students will explore the characteristics of English Romanticism as background for reading "The Solitary Reaper."

William Wordsworth is one of the leading authors of English Romanticism. "The Solitary Reaper" shows strong Romantic influences. This lesson prepares students to read the poem and discover its Romantic characteristics.

Lesson

Viewing Activity: Show students Heather Barton's video "Romanticism and British Literature" and John Stacy's video "Wordsworth and Romanticism" (both available online).

Partner Activity: After removing the names of their authors, distribute copies of Charlotte Smith's "Sonnet II" and Alexander Pope's "Epistle to Miss Blount, On Her Leaving the Town, After the Coronation" (both available online). Divide the class into pairs. Ask the partners to read both poems and then decide which is written by a Romantic poet, justifying their answer in a paragraph.
