A scientific expedition is a trip into a known or unknown area with the purpose of studying the area, the vegetation, or the people who do or have populated the area.

Dr. Whittlesey is placing an artifact into a crate packed with local vegetation so that it might be sent back to the Museum of Natural History. This particular artifact that Whittlesey is placing in the crate is the only artifact he has been able to find that he believes shows proof of the existence of the Kothoga Indians.

The Whittlesey expedition takes place in 1987. This is eight years before the beginning of the main part of the novel, five years after the crates from the expedition finally arrive at the Museum of Natural History.
