Objective

The lesson of this objective is to have students analyze the introduction of the story found in Part 1: August 25, 1991. Students will examine how the author uses words and phrases to establish Charlie's personality and emotional disposition. Additionally, they will discuss the potential impact of Charlie's sensitivity and melancholic nature on his interactions and experiences as he begins high school. Charlie is a sensitive and melancholic boy about to begin his freshman year of high school in his suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He begins writing letters to an unnamed friend, a person he admits to not knowing.
