Lesson 1 (from Part One: Three-Year Anniversary)

Objective

The Leftovers, by Tom Perrotta, examines the fallout after a “Sudden Departure” of millions of people on earth. The episodic narrative transitions between the stories of the four members of the Garvey family: Kevin, Laurie, Jill, and Tom. In the Prologue, the author establishes the setting of the novel and introduces the character of Laurie Garvey and the organization known as the “GR.” Objectives for this lesson include researching Biblical interpretations of the Rapture, examining the setting of the Prologue, identifying the novel’s narrative style, and analyzing the character of Laurie Garvey in The Leftovers.
