Objective

When the book opens in 1835 London is the center of the financial world. George Peabody opens a merchant bank in 1838. When he retires in 1864, Junius Morgan renames the company J.S. Morgan and Company. The objective of this lesson is to learn the history of the J.S. Morgan and Company and the main characters involved in its beginnings.

Lesson

1. Divide the class into three groups. Have one group write a short biography of George Peabody, including the important events in his life that lead to the establishment of the merchant bank in London. Have another group write a short biography of Junius Morgan, including the important events in his life that lead to his becoming a partner in Peabody's company. What were his goals and ambitions?
