Lesson 1 (from Section 1: "The Gift Outright," Lines 1-16)

Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is to acquire an understanding of the historical context of "The Gift Outright" to increase engagement with and comprehension of the poem. "The Gift Outright" was first published long before the Kennedy inauguration that it is popularly associated with, and by the time of the 1961 inauguration, it had become one of Kennedy's favorite poems by one of his favorite poets. Kennedy asked Frost to read this poem, and even though Frost wrote a new poem specifically for the 1961 event, he did end up reading "The Gift Outright." He even made a slight alteration to the poem's final line, at Kennedy's request. This lesson asks students to acquaint themselves with this history, to make predictions about the poem based on its history, and to consider what Kennedy's aim might have been in asking for the change to the poem's final line...
