Chapters 1-8

• In Chapter 1, “The Field,” Matthew, Zoe, and Duncan Lang walk home from school on a Monday in September, 1999, because their father does not pick them up.

• Zoe sees something in a nearby field.

• The children climb over a gate and discover an unconscious boy with blood on his legs.

• Duncan goes to flag for help on the road while Zoe strokes the boy’s arm.

• The first few cars ignore him.

• Then a woman stops and he tells her there is a boy hurt in the field.

• She goes to call an ambulance.

• Zoe notices the boy’s shorts are torn in several places.

• She remembers how last autumn her mother had lectured her and her friend Moira about being 15 and being careful about taking lifts from strangers or leaving if grownups started acting strange.

• Duncan returns and says that a woman has gone for help...
