British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6)

This intelligence branch is the equivalent of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). This organization's operations in Asia are particularly important at a time when a key British Crown colony is scheduled to revert, by treaty, to the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Hong Kong

This British Crown colony is scheduled to be returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 (about a decade after the time period in which this novel is set). This colony's name is a broad term for the main island itself, as well as numerous surrounding islands, including the city of Kowloon on the peninsula across crowded Victoria Harbor.
