Objective

The Book and the Brotherhood is written by Irs Murdoch and was published in 1987.

The aim of this lesson is to introduce the novel to the students.

Lesson

1. Class discussion. What do the students already know about Iris Murdoch? What can they tell from the book by looking at its cover and reading the title? What do the students expect from the novel? Why do they expect these things to happen?

2. With the students look at the questions that Murdoch asks in the opening chapter of the novel.Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down five questions Acroyd poses. After ten minutes, ask the students to swap their work with another pairs and provide solutions to the questions. After fifteen minutes compare the student's ideas and for each one ask what will have to happen in the story for these answers...
