All of these stories and their authors are significant and were included in the collection for a reason. This lesson will focus on the authors' history and impact on literature.

Lesson

1) Research: Have each student choose an author from the book. Take the class to the library to learn about each author's place in literary history. While searching, ask yourself, why are these authors important? Why were these stories and themes relevant during this century? Why do they remain relevant? What makes them "American"? What other authors did they influence?

2) Partner Discussion: Pair off and discuss the individual findings of your research. Be sure to adequately inform the other students of your findings.

3) Partner Presentation: Each student must present to the class what their partner taught them about the authors and stories in order to demonstrate their understanding of the subject as well as...
