Chapter 1: Grandfather

• The story takes place on a little potato farm in Wyoming where Little Willy lives with his grandfather.

• "One day Grandfather wouldn't get out of bed" (3).

• At first, little Willy thinks grandfather is playing a joke on him because he has played jokes on him in the past.

• Once, Grandfather dressed up as the scarecrow in the garden and little Willy did not notice him dressed up there for almost an hour.

• The scarecrow trick makes little Willy and Grandfather laugh until they cry.

• Grandfather's beard fills up with tears when he laughs that hard.

• Every morning, Grandfather gets up early to start a fire and make breakfast.
