Class Discussion 1:

How might losing her mother affect Daisy, as the story progresses?

Class Discussion 2:

How might losing his wife affect Cuyler's attitude toward his new daughter, Daisy?

Class Activity:

Ask each student to write an in-class essay of at least 500 words about how they would feel if they lost a parent, like Daisy did, and how they think those feelings will affect Daisy as the story moves on. For example, what things would most girls rely on a mother for that Daisy will no longer have a mother to teach her?
