• SPARTINA is the story of a middle-aged fisherman named Dick Pierce who is determined to carry on the family tradition of being a New England fisherman providing for his family on his own land and his own boat.
• Dick's irascible temperament causes him to alienate himself from those who are in a position to help him achieve his goal of finishing the construction of his boat.
• Dick's only way of supporting his wife and two sons at the time is illegal digging of clams.
Chapter 3 | Chapter 4
• Dick recalls trying to make some money with a friend, Larry Parker, in some less than ethical instances on charter boats.
• Dick learns that Parker smuggles drugs and Dick has become an unwitting accomplice.
• Dick's wife, May, feels that Parker is a bad influence on Dick but right now Dick needs the work that he can get by going out...
