Lesson 1 (from Section I - Chapters1-4)

Objective

Students will learn about foreshadowing and discuss how it is used as a successful literary technique in writing.

Throughout the first chapter of the text, Flynn uses the literary device of foreshadowing to provide clues about Camille and the issues she struggles with. In the opening scene, she is fixated on Curry's thumbtack. Later, she comments that she only takes baths because she cannot stand the feel of shower water against her skin. She also describes the first time she masturbated, suggesting that sexuality and violence will have strong connections in this novel.

Lesson

Class Activity: Students will be given the definition of foreshadowing. They will be asked to come up with a list of quotes that give examples of foreshadowing in the text so far. They will look for passages or symbols that leave the reader with questions.
