Objective

Prologue and Chapter 1

It is a stormy day and the people of the town are walking along the levees, voicing their concerns about the water level. The author also provides a description of events which happened prior to the present day. Providing information about previous events and concern for the levees is indicative of foreshadowing, which is the objective for this lesson.

Lesson

1. Have students work in pairs to identify and describe the characters that are introduced. Analyze their descriptions and predict the roles they will play based on the information provided by the author. Each pair should make a chart so that they can explain their reasoning to the class.
