Objective

Objective: Prologue, July 1956 The novel is about a man who recalls his life serving as a butler at a great home in England during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. The objective of this lesson is to explore the profession of being a butler.

1) Lead the class in a discussion about the profession of being a butler. Begin with a description and ask the students to add their thoughts on the profession. How familiar are the students with the profession? Since butlers are reserved for very wealthy households, most students will not have had any one-on-one experiences with them. To what can the average student compare a butler in his/her world? Do any students think being a butler is still a viable profession? Why or why not? Would any of the students consider a profession in domestic service in a wealthy household?
