Objective

Objective: SIBLINGS - In this act, we see the beginnings of the relationship between Boy Willie and his sister, Berniece. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the relationship between these two siblings and to discuss the ways that this relationship will affect the conflicts within the story.

1) 1.) As a class, compare/contrast the two siblings, Berniece and Boy Willie. They were raised in the same family, by the same family members. What is the same about them? What is different? Is there anything unexpected/surprising in that comparison?

2.) Do you think the relationship between Boy Willie and his sister has always been as strained as it is in the first act of this play? Divide the class into two groups for a cross classroom debate. After 15 minutes, add another complication: What do you think was the trigger for the change in their relationship...
