The objective of this lesson is to have students explore their responses after an initial reading of the first episode of Brian Friel’s Philadelphia Here I Come and share their opinions.

Class Discussion: Discuss your first response to the play. What do you think of Gar? Who is Lizzy? Why do you think Gar wants to leave? Where is he going? Who is Madge? How would you describe the relationship between Gar and his father, SB O’Donnell? What is the role of the private Gar? What is the role of the public Gar?

Small Group Activity: Divide the students into small groups and ask students to note what they liked about the play. This could include details about characters, their thoughts and actions, the plot, and the themes. Regroup the students and ask them to share their opinions. Write them on the board...
