Episode 1

• The stage shows the kitchen in County Councillor S.B. O’Donnell’s house and Gar’s bedroom. One door leads to the scullery or pantry. Another door leads to SB’s shop.

• Madge, the housekeeper in her sixties, enters with a tray and sets the table. She calls for Gar to come for tea.

• Gar enters, in a happy mood, singing “Philadelphia here I come, right back where I started from.”

• Gar shows his happiness by waltzing with Madge and flirting with her.

• Madge protests and mentions that he smells like fish.

• Gar, who is leaving for Philadelphia the next day, asks if Madge will miss him.

• Madge avoids answering him and then admits that she will.

• Gar then asks Madge what time...
