1) For class discussion: What is the first element in the plot of a story? What is the function of exposition in a story? Why is exposition important? What information does the author present in the exposition of Phantastes? Be specific.

2) Groups: Divide the students into groups of three or four. Have the students discuss the question: From what you have read in the exposition, what do you predict will be stronger in Phantastes--plot development or character development? Why?

3) Individual: writing assignment: Have the students write a paragraph addressing the question: Does the exposition make you want to continue reading...
