Chapters 1 through 14 describe Grant's family and their influence on his life. This lesson will discuss Grant's parentage and his admittance into West Point.

Class Discussion: Describe Grant's parents. How do they compare to parents of today?

Small Group Activity: Why was Grant reluctant to believe he should attend West Point? What does this reveal about his character? How was he able to be admitted into West Point? What does this admittance reveal about him?

Class Discussion: Discuss the students' responses. What influence did Grant's parents have on his personality? How might his upbringing have helped him gain admittance into West Point? How might the acceptance into West Point foreshadow much of his adult life?
