Objective

The author spends much of Chapter 1 describing the town of Pietrelcina to help set the scene for Padre Pio's childhood. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the setting of Pietrelcina.

What did Padre Pio's parents do to make a living? How did the children help out here? What did Pietrelcina look like during Padre Pio's childhood? How did residents feel about their town? What did the residents have in common? In what ways did they differ? What role did religion play in Pietrelcina?
