Chapter 1

• Dirk Pitt, the main character, is introduced and important features of his personality are captured in his actions that set the story in motion.

• Dirk's attention is caught by a bright yellow object floating out beyond the breakers at the beach he is sunbathing at, Kaena Point. Instead of doing the rational thing and waiting for the thing to come ashore on its own, driven by the current, Dirk's daredevil instincts and brash, somewhat reactionary tendencies take hold and he swims out in spite of the danger from riptides and sharks to retrieve the object.
• The object turns out to be a canister containing a manuscript that records the final days of the US Naval submarine, "Starbuck."

• After reading the captain's log, Dirk notices the name Admiral Leigh Hunter on the last page and immediately sets out to meet with the Admiral and turn over his find...
