Objective

Objective: Act 1, Part 1. One of the main characters in the play is Rakitin, a friend of Natalya's family and a particular favorite of Natalya. While normally he is only seen in relation to Natalya, in this section the reader has the chance to see who he is and what his social expectations are in general. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the character Rakitin, including his personality and his connection with other people in his life.

1. Character sketch. Using the details that come up in the section, including those that are subtle or implied, write a paragraph on Rakitin. What is his station in life? What do you imagine he looks like, and how does he behave? What are his motivations?

2. Group discussion. Consider Rakitin's description of his time with the Krinitsins. What insight into Rakitin's personality does this story give you, and how? Describe...
