1. How does Chiyo feel about Mr. Tanaka when she first meets him?

Chiyo obviously looks up to and admires Mr. Tanaka. She describes his elegance and while she is sitting on the table in the Seafood Company after her fall, she can't stop staring at him. She is also impressed by his kindness in helping her, especially against the will of other workers in the company who don't want a girl there. When Mr. Tanaka tells her that she is beautiful, she blushes deeply and tells the reader that she could almost believe it was true.

2. How does Chiyo rationalize the visit with Mrs. Fidget, considering her hopes that Mr. Tanaka will adopt her and Satsu?

Chiyo is so convinced that Mr. Tanaka intends to adopt the two and so unaware of what else might be going on that she comes up with a rather naïve explanation for the visit with Mrs. Fidget, in which an older woman inspects the two, requiring them to undress and putting her hands between their legs. Chiyo tells Satsu that she believes Mrs. Fidget must be a fortune-teller and the Mr. Tanaka probably hired her to tell him everything she can about the two before he adopts them.
