Objective

In the first two chapters, the author describes the fishing villages of Yoroido and Senzuru. This first daily lesson on the novel "Memoirs of a Geisha" explores the setting and mood for the story in these chapters.

Lesson

1) Have your students work in small groups to discuss what they know about Yoroido and Senzuru from their reading. What might these villages look like? What kinds of lives might the people there lead? What does Chiyo's house look like? What does Mr. Tanaka's house look like?

2) Have each group make a list of five quotes from the first two chapters that they think describe Yoroido and Senzuru particularly well. Have each group read their quotes aloud to the class.

3) Ask each student to spend a few minutes silently brainstorming adjectives that describe Yoroido and/or Senzuru. This should help students boil down and solidify the information they...
