1. Class Discussion: What was happening in the world in 1943 when the book was published? Leon Werth was living in France where the author, Antoine de Saint Exupery, writes "he is hungry and cold." What was the situation in France that had created this kind of suffering? Is it important to understand what is happening in the world of an author in order to comprehend the book? Can literature ever be timeless or is it always influenced by the events and situation in which the author finds him/herself?
