1. Why should Mariah and Faith not have been home when her mother called?

Mariah and Faith should have been at the grocery store or dry cleaners when Mariah's mother called, but the grocery store was closed, and the dry cleaner had a death in the family. Mariah lives her life by a schedule and every day of the week has a set routine. Wednesday was the day to go to the bank, the grocery store and the dry cleaner.

2. Describe Mariah's home.

Mariah and Faith live in a century-old farmhouse. The house is bordered on one side by a forest and on the other side by a stone wall. Their seven acres are mostly woods. The house is close enough to the road that at night the headlights of passing cars sweep past like lighthouse beacons.

3. What are certain things that Mariah does not like to talk about?

Mariah does not like to talk about certain things that happened in her life. For example, when she was thirteen and had to take her dog to have her put to sleep. Or the time in high school when she got dressed for the prom, waiting for a boy who never came. Or the way she felt that she and Colin were not right for each other when she first met him. She does not talk about five years later when she was proved right.
