Introduction - Chapter 3

· In the “Introduction,” the author writes that around the world and throughout history, children have been laborers.
· They have worked in homes or fields and contributed to their family’s survival or their community.
· As countries moved from agriculture to manufacturing, child labor was necessary for successful development.
· At the time the book was written, more than 200 million children between the ages of five and 17 were “economically active” (v) around the world.
· About 73 million were under ten, and about six million were working in “forced and bonded labor” (v).
· Bonded labor is a system where a person works for a predetermined period of time to pay off a debt.
