· The playwright, Paula Vogel, received a call in 2009 from Rebecca Taichman regarding whether or not she would be interested in writing a play about the 1906 play, Sholem Asch’s The God of Vengeance, that went to trial in 1923 due to its obscene content.

· Vogel had read the play while a student at Cornell University and distinctly remembers this play that had a love scene between the two women and was written by a newly married man. ·

· This play changed Vogel’s attitude and assumptions regarding empathy and gender roles.

· Vogel had read about a young director who had staged the obscenity trials as her thesis; this director was Rebecca Taichman who called Paula Vogel...
