Front Matter through “Archipelago”
· The following version of this novel was used to create this Lesson Plan: Rundell, Katherine. Impossible Creatures. Illustrated by Ashley Mackenzie and Virginia Allyn, Alfred A. Knopf, 2024.
· Following the title and copyright pages, a dedication, a map, and epigraphs, the novel begins with “The Beginning” and the immediate presentation of a threat to Christopher.
· The threat is described, and the note is made that Christopher resists the threat against him.
· “The Beginning, Elsewhere,” opens with Mal being presented with a threat, as well.
· Mal’s abilities are described and a gloss of her day is given, with the threat then emerging.
· “Arrival” returns to Christopher and moves to Christopher transiting to his grandfather’s home, animals attending on him to the comment of passers-by.
· Christopher’s long-standing affinity with animals is rehearsed, and his changing attitudes towards it are noted: “As a small child...
