Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

How is grief shown as affecting Noah? How is it shown as affecting Jude? How is it shown as affecting their father? Write an exploratory essay showing how grief manifests in each of these characters. Include how their grief overlaps or how the grief of one character affects or is interpreted by another character. What sets the grief free for each of the characters? Write a summative claim about what the novel is showing about the experience of grief.

Essay Topic 2

When Jude first is at CSA, she thinks of herself as non-artistic, thinking that Noah is the artistic one. Later, she finds her craft and also finds that her mother wanted to be an artist. Connect these two characters together. How does their courage to follow what they want allow them to create the life they want? Where do they find the courage to take each of these new journeys on? Write three pages with four examples from the novel.

Essay Topic 3

Grief held inside is shown to hold characters down so they can no longer do what they love or be who they are. What does the novel say must happen for grief to be released? Explore this through at least two characters in the novel and their journey to release their grief.
