Essay Topic 1

Jude says at the end of the novel, “Love does as it undoes. It goes after, with equal tenacity: joy and heartbreak” (355). How is this morality of the novel shown in the characters' journey? Choose two characters and compare this morality to their lives and experiences. How do their experiences add up morally in the end? Write at least four pages with four examples from the novel.

Essay Topic 2

In Chapter Five, Noah’s mom compares him to his dad and tells him, “Jude and I have quite a bit of armor on us [...] It takes a lot to break through” (284). Noah has an antagonistic relationship with his dad for most of the novel, while Jude has an antagonistic relationship with her mom. What does each of the twin’s relationships with their parents, and how each of these relationships changes or is re-understood in the novel, say about family dynamics?
