Objective

Objective: Franz Kafka: As an introduction to the study of "A Hunger Artist," today's class will examine the short story's author, Franz Kafka. Kafka (1883-1924) was from a Jewish family in Prague, held a law degree, and published several short stories until his death at the early age of 40. Kafka died in relative obscurity, however, and it was not until almost 40 years following his death that he came to be regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. In this class, students will research the history of the author and his works, establish the context of his writing, and determine the importance of author biography in literary studies.
